Improve your sense of well being, confidence and self image with a surgery that enjoys the latest and best in know-how.
What is Breast Augmentation or Enlargement?
Breast augmentation is among the top cosmetic surgery procedures sought abroad. Since it is one of the most developed areas of cosmetic surgery and has a long history behind it, you will be able to enjoy the latest and best know-how in the field of breast augmentation surgery.
Breast augmentation or enlargement, known also by its medical name ‘augmentation mammaplasty’, is a procedure to primarily increase breast size. The procedure uses implants placed behind the breast tissue and employs various breast surgery techniques to increase the volume of and to reshape breasts. Here, we use the terms augmentation and enlargement interchangeably.
Why you might consider Breast Augmentation
There are several reasons why you might wish to have breast augmentation. These may include your desire for physical enhancement, as well as your wish to improve your sense of well being, confidence and self image.
You may choose to have breast augmentation surgery because you…
- feel your natural breast size is too small or out of proportion to your body frame
- wish for cosmetic reasons to enlarge your breast volume
- want to correct breast size following weight loss or pregnancy or on account of ageing
- want to correct a difference in size between your breasts (asymmetrical breasts)
- are having breast reconstruction following surgery, injury or a mastectomy
You should only consider breast augmentation for your own reasons and not to adhere to someone else’s view or an ideal of how you should look. Our surgeons are understanding and are competent to discuss all aspects of your augmentation. At consultation stage, they will also assess whether…
- you are physically fit to undergo surgery
- you have realistic expectations of the outcome
- you have fully developed breasts*
*At Mobilise, we would not usually offer surgery to women whose breasts have not have reached full maturity. It is against our policy to accept candidates who are below the age of 18 years. In all cases, surgery is subject to the surgeon’s discretion.
What Breast surgery won’t do
Breast augmentation won’t correct severely drooping breast shapes. For this, you can opt for a breast lift which in most instances can be carried out at the same time as your breast enlargement surgery.
Choice of Breast Implants
The implants used today have been developed with the benefit of well over 40 years’ experience of prosthetics in this field of surgery. Today, we mainly use cohesive gel implants. The type used in your surgery will depend not just on how great an increase in breast volume you desire, but also on your anatomy, skin’s elasticity, your body type and the type of surgery most suited to your needs.
Implants come in tear-drop or ‘anatomical’ shape or are round. Tear-drop is often used for reconstructive breast surgery and round for general breast enlargement. Your surgeon will use the shape best for your aesthetic needs and may have a personal preference. Do spend plenty of time exploring in detail the look, feel and breast size you desire and discuss this with your surgeon.
Types of Breast Implants
The outer shell of the implants is made of a solid silicone material. Solid silicone is widely used in implantable medical devices.
Cohesive gel implants are filled with an elastic gel. As the gel is semi-solid, these implants feel and move much like natural breast tissue. If the implant leaks, the gel may remain within the implant shell, or may escape into the breast implant pocket.
A leaking implant filled with silicone gel may not collapse. If you choose these implants, you may need to check-up at regular intervals to make sure the implants are in tact and working properly. This can be done with an ultrasound or MRI screening.
Though rarely used Surgeons do occasionally suggest saline implants which are filled with sterile salt water – the same kind of water that is used in I.V. fluids. They can be filled with varying amounts of saline which can affect the shape, firmness and feel of the breast. If the implant shell leak, a saline implant will collapse and the saline will be absorbed and naturally expelled by the body.
There are constantly new styles and types of implants arriving on the market. Your surgeon will advise you on this.
